I am writing to you to clear up a misunderstanding concerning the so-called "endorsement of Bernie Sanders" by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Number one, the Congressional By-Laws that set up the VFW state "no officer or member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US shall in any manner use the VFW for partisan politics and no discussion or partisan questions shall be permitted at any meetings nor shall any nominations, recommendations or endorse-ments for political office be made." While a political action committee, separate from the VFW, paid for from its own fund raising, does advise the VFW on how candidates voted during the previous session, that PAC is not part of the VFW, as is being portrayed by Mr. Sanders. The blatant use of the VFW logo, (the Cross of Malta) in Mr. Sander’s advertisements clearly says that the American Legion, VFW, etc., endorse him for the US Senate. I cannot speak for the other veterans’ organizations, but I can unequivocally state that the Vermont VFW organization does not endorse Mr. Sanders nor anyone else in their bid for various offices. The right of every US citizen is his individual privilege of choosing who he will support in any election. The VFW is composed of warriors who have made the sacrifice to ensure that this right is not taken away. Daniel Boone Randolph State Commander VFW, Vermont ____________ |
