The Lady Red Devils suffered a tough loss to the Blue Mountain Bucks and the seemingly unstoppable Alyssa Nurse. Chelsea got off to a good start in the first quarter keeping up with the Bucks, but with 6’4 Nurse planted on the lower block and receiving any sort of lob pass from her fellow teammates it looked gloomy for the Devils. Blue Mountain began pulling away in the second quarter with Nurse rebounding and throwing the ball up court for the fast break. The Devils went into the half with a nine point deficit, 25-16. Chelsea went into the second half looking to intercept passes and run on the Bucks. It worked, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Blue Mountain. Chelsea was presented with a 2-3 zone, and seemed able to score on it, unlike previous games. Chelsea coach John Parker took notice, "I think it was our best game against a zone. We were able to move the ball around and score. The zone had been giving us trouble earlier in the season." Although Chelsea put up a good fight and played a good game it just wasn’t enough. "Nurse is almost unstoppable from the low post," Parker said. Chelsea was no match for Nurse who led her team with 28 points and 12 rebounds. She was followed by Chelsea Murray with 10 points. The Red Devils were led by Mo Driscoll with 16 points and Jill Cray with eight points. Cray had an outstanding game, she seemed to be the best match for Nurse. Cray pulled down eight rebounds for the Devils and Mary Childs grabbed six of her own and netted seven points. The Lady Devils will host Cabot this Saturday. JV game time is 6 p.m., and will be followed by varsity at 7:30 p.m. By Maureen Driscoll |
