Weaving, Pottery Classes at WRCC

Start the New Year off right, and learn something new or refine the skills you already have in classes offered by the White River Craft Center on Randolph Ave. The Craft Center is equipped with all the tools and materials you will need for all classes.

•Local potter Amy LePage will start an eight-week adult ceramics class Monday, Jan. 16 from 6-9 p.m. You will learn hand building and throwing techniques such as slab, pinch, tiles and texturizing. Start off with cylinders on the wheel then explore bowls, pitchers and altering your pieces. One to two other times a week will be designated for practice. Class size is limited so contact Amy now at 728-2549 for more information and to register.

Two weaving classes, an introductory and basic review class and a block weave class, are being offered by local weaving instructor Susan Rockwell.

•A six-week introductory class will start January 17 from 6-9 p.m. at the Kimball House Weaving Studio. This class is for first time weavers or for those who already know how to weave, but have a specific project they would like to accomplish.

Students will learn step-by-step how to use the loom, measure a warp, dress the loom and weave a sampler of different weave patterns, yarns and colors. Students will also learn how to prepare and interpret weaving drafts and plan a project of their own choice from beginning to end whether a piece of fabric, scarf or place mat. One goal of this class is for the students to have the knowledge to continue weaving when the class is finished.

•Starting January 11 is a Drafting and Designing with Blocks class for weavers who already know how to dress and warp a loom. Participants will explore the fun and unlimited versatility that weaving with blocks can create. Learn how pattern and design in weaving depend on blocks. The class will cover a basic review of drafting and participants will learn profile drafting and weave structures such as Spot Bronson, M’s & O’s, Overshot, Crackle and unit weaves.

Each student will weave off a sample from each of the block weaves studied and will weave at least one project in a block design of their choice. This class will start Wed., Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. The class schedule will be determined by the students, who will weave on floor looms in the Weaving Studio at Kimball House.

Class size is limited for both of these weaving class and interested students should contact Susan at 728-9728 for additional details and to register.
