The South Royalton school budget passed this year with around 8% voter turn out. This is better than some years, previously, where much small percentages turned out. So why float a petition for a revote? Several citizens approaches me to ask if I would spearhead such an unpopular initiative. The 4250,000 increase to just under $4.5 million total galvanized them into action. This is a large request when measured against an economy that is rapidly "going south." Forty two Vermont towns shot down their budget requests this year as a form of peaceful protest of Act 60. Act 60 is unsustainable and will (and is) devastating property taxpayers. So folks, the peaceful logical, and legal way to get a consensus on the budget is to follow the petition guidelines outlined in Vt. Statutes. Hopefully a far greater voter turn-out the second time around will "settle the field" one way or the other. In the meantime, the petition is collecting signatures at Jefferson’s store and other places around town. David A. McCullough Royalton |
