Brother Acts
With all the accomplishments of the Rikert brothers, and the accompanying appropriate news reports, we would do well to note that there are several other brother combinations around who have had some fine high school careers, or whose careers are still unfolding. Whitcomb's young Wright brothers, Adam a sophomore, and Justin, a freshman, had very fine seasons this spring for the Hornets and coach Steve Bird. It seems like every news report mentioned one or both of these talented ballplayers as having been key contributors to the Hornets’ cause. Likewise for the Richards brothers, Tracy and Korey. Though Korey ["Special K" they called him] graduated last year, for a couple seasons the Richards were instrumental in Whitcomb athletics, especially baseball. Kevin Chap and Ryan Becker won a state hoop title together and have been in college for a while now, but younger brothers Brian Chap and Jon Becker have been key figures in the Hornets' sports scene. South Royalton baseball this Spring featured the Calabro brother act. Shortstop Tim, a junior, and catcher Dan, a freshman, helped the Royals in every game. Dan, who saw considerable action behind the plate last summer for Post 51, seems a lock to be the best catcher the Royals have had since Brian Simoni. There are likely to be few young men in the area who think more about baseball than these two! Geoff Tuller graduated and moved on, but younger brother Jaimond is a fine athlete, too, and was a key cog in the Royals' outstanding soccer team last Fall. Quinn Fulcher and Josh Woods, each of whom also had fine diamond seasons this spring, have younger brothers, Nevin and Jeremiah, who seem a lock to contribute when they reach high school. The efforts of Rochester's Chadwick brothers, Will and Evan, have been much chronicled, and it was Will's goaltending as much as anything that paced the Rockets to a state soccer title only a couple years ago. Evan, then a freshman, was on the field contributing the whole way that season, and now seems to be the Rockets' basketball team leader. Will, who has graduated, and Matt Richardson have also been important members of Rocket sports' teams. -Baseball and softball have ended for all our local schools, with only season-ending barbecues remaining. Not one of the area entries got so much as a top four seed, with the Gal Ghosts and the Lady Royals leading the way with fifth place selections. No area team was able to make their way to the final four, though several teams made it close with strong efforts in the quarterfinals. -Favorite sports memories of one reader: Cedric Maxwell's sensational play in the Boston Celtics' 1981 playoff series with the 76ers. George "Boomer" Scott's terrific "D" at first base and long ball presence for the Red Sox in the late 60's and early 70's. |
